Two Lake Forest sailors, Alec Ranker and Leo Kumar, are poised to compete in the U.S. National Sailing Championship for junior sailors from Aug. 8-12. They will head out in the singlehanded fleet, which is typically raced in ILCA 6

Held on Lake Michigan in Macatawa Bay, Mich., both sailors are ready for whatever weather they encounter in the race for the Smythe Trophy.

Alec Ranker survived blustery conditions in Muskegon, Mich. to make the national championship.

“Alec and Leo have a lot of experience in classic wind-driven Lake Michigan waves,” coach Will Howard said.

In fact, the duo made it to the finals because they navigated blustery conditions successfully during the eight-race regatta qualifier in Muskegon, Mich. Teammates Peter Janowicz, Maddie Rode, and Grace Renz also competed there.

Leo Kumar is ready for the U.S. National Sailing Championship for junior sailors in Michigan.
