The City of Lake Forest recently completed a sidewalk improvement project in the Whispering Oaks neighborhood, enhancing connectivity and safety for pedestrians.

As part of the City’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure and public safety – key priorities in the City’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan – the project focused on repairing aging sidewalks and installing new curb ramps to improve accessibility at intersections.

New curb ramps make it easier to access sidewalks in Whispering Oaks.

"This will help kids get to and from Cherokee School, and it improves safety overall," said Second Ward Alderman Ted Notz, whose Ward includes Whispering Oaks. "It's an example of the government really working to solve a problem, and it's wonderful in this day and age to see that happen," said Melanie Rummel, the former alderman for the neighborhood, which sits south of Westleigh Road and north of Old Elm Road.

The need for improved connectivity had been a consistent concern for local families. Sidewalk segments in the area didn’t connect from block to block, creating gaps that made walking to school more difficult and less safe. Recognizing this, the City identified a timely opportunity to address the issue through the Illinois Safe Routes to School program, funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

“This neighborhood was tailor-made for the grant,” said Alex Kendzior, Engineering Project Manager. “It already has sidewalks, but the intersections didn't have ramp crossings. Now it will be so much easier for kids to get onto the sidewalks with their bikes.”

The grant covered approximately 50 percent of the total project cost, allowing the City to accelerate the timeline and expand the scope of improvements.

While construction temporarily disrupted some routines, residents say the outcome has been well worth it. Kate Walters, who grew up in the neighborhood, said, "When I was younger, a lot of the streets and sidewalks were old and needed to be done. Overall, I'm happy that they fixed the sidewalks and roads - they're all much better. And they finally repainted the crosswalks!"

The project reflects the City’s continued investment in neighborhood infrastructure that supports walkability, school access, and quality of life for all residents.
