By Spencer Trees The Summer Arts Festival in Lake Bluff offered a few nice surprises this year. “I didn’t really think colored pencil was high art or anything until I saw the exhibit (by Phillip Schorn),” said Jude Weinstein, a long-time event attendee.

Pottery was among the many items for sale at the Summer Arts Festival. The Summer Arts Festival's 25th anniversary took place on the Village Green over two days recently. Entry was free and showcased the work -- available for sale -- of local artists. This year offered an array of choices, including painting, sculpture, jewelry and pen design. The event also included a children's tent courtesy of the Art Impact Project, which uses art to achieve its goal of “enhancing emotional wellness through creative expression.”

Erin Whalen, a participating artist and self-proclaimed “mixed-media gal,” is a huge fan of the event, which has been run by the nonprofit Artists on the Bluff since its founding in 2000. “The venue is beautiful and a perfect backdrop for all of the magnificent artwork,” she said. “The team of people who coordinate this festival does an excellent job of making it a wonderful experience for the visitors as well as the participating artists. Also, when someone purchases one of my pieces, I’m happy that my work brings pleasure to others.”

Fellow artist Schorn -- he of the colored pencil art -- noted, “Being with other artists of the same or better caliber can only make you look better. The festival had many very talented artists exhibiting. The visitors to the show were not disappointed.”

Whalen also touched on the importance of sharing art with others. “I find beauty and inspiration in all forms of artwork. The ability to create a work of art is a marvelous gift. I’m always in awe of the endless possibilities. I hope to inspire others with my work as well.”

Weinstein has been attending the festival for years, but he appreciates it more now than he did when he was younger. “Especially after trying to do more art myself, it’s like a cool connection for me to be able to attend," he said. "The 25th Annual Summer Arts Festival was a great way to kick off the summer!”
